The Queen of Crime: Agatha Christie's Best Poirot Novels

July 08, 20233 min read

I've read a ton of Agatha Christie's novels. By a ton I mean I own 19 physical books, not including the ones I've given away, listened to as an audio book, took out from the library, or rented online. I've also read the spin offs (authors who write under her name and try to emulate her style - lovely books but who can compare to the Queen of Crime?) By far, my favorite detective of hers is the one and only Hercule Poirot. Today, I'm going to be ranking my top eight favorites, just because. Also, I'm not including Murder on the Orient Express or And Then There Were None. Those are fantastic and so popular and you don't need me recommending them to you! Here you go! (Warning: No spoilers about endings ahead but ones about the crime ish)

8. Death in the Clouds

To be honest, the crime itself it what makes this book so interesting is the crime. Out of 12 passengers on an airplane, who is the murderer? And how did they commit the crime? You'll have to read to find out, and bonus points if you know that pun in this paragraph! >:)

7. The Murder on the Links

This was a very interesting read, and don't worry, you don't have to know much about golf! As is often in Christie's works, there are exciting side plots going on throughout the novel which add to the confusion and intrigue.

6. Five Little Pigs

This one threw me for a loop. It's quite a tragic story (although I guess they all are, with the murders and all). Anyway, I really enjoyed it because the suspects were clearly laid out, the clever addition of a nursery rhyme both complicated and straightened out the plot, and Poirot had to investigate a crime that occurred sixteen years ago (and for which someone has already been convicted).

5. Evil Under the Sun

This novel was really exciting. I wrote an essay about it my junior year of high school, which now is probably pretty embarrassing. Anyway, this is an alluring novel which I found difficult to put down!!!

4. Death on the Nile

I'm already planning out another post on why this book is so much better than the movie, but please humor me and read it! It is so exciting, confusing, and the ending is just wow!!!! There's a reason why it was made into a movie (which doesn't even do it justice!). This is one of Christie's most popular works for a reason, it's also one of her finest!

3. Cards on the Table

This one is SO GOOD! A classic "these people were locked in a room so one of them had to have committed the crime," I was throughly stumped the whole time (in the best way), and learned a little about bridge too!

2. The Big Four

Out of all the ones I've read, this has got to be the craziest. For a while it was my favorite because it was so large-scale, unique, and more chaotic than Christie's other works. Most of the Poirot's seem calmer? If that's the right word? I was on my toes for every page (especially at the end) and if you're looking for a really really really exciting book to read I suggest this one! Also, four is my lucky number so this book is just really satisfying, oops!

8. The ABC Murders

The ABC Murders has to be my favorite. I don't want to spoil a single thing, but in my opinion this book is absolutely perfect. Please please please read it!

Here are my top 8 Agatha Christie Poirot novels (excluding Murder on the Orient Express or And Then There Were None of course)! If you decide to read any of them or already have, I hope you enjoy!
